Working in an AdvoCats sponsored spay/neuter clinic is Lorna and Sandy's idea of a vacation!

The beautiful island of Hawaii, or the Big Island as some know it has become Lorna's great escape, and also a place for her to learn about taking care of feral cats! Advocats Hawaii, Inc. is a group based in Kona that organises TNR (trap, neuter, release) colonies throughout the island. There are many volunteers who feed, monitor, trap, transport these feral cats to the clinics where they are altered, microchipped, defleaed and given lots of hugs - usually the first ever human contact happens when these babes are given their anasthesia and held during and after surgery. This year the vets of the Neuter Scooter clinic have performed surgeries for the local community and the advocats group. Lorna learned eartipping and was able to practice on many ferals during the days at Kona and Kohala Clinics. This will be an essential part of TNR and managed feral colonies, it helps to keep track of who has been altered. This clinic tipped the right ear of the females and the left ear of the males, which is a widespread practice. This allows people to identify fixed cats at a distance and quickly identify which sex and their reproductive state when trapping. Another skill learned and practiced studiously, Microchipping is being done across the country in an effort to keep track of pets and also to help identify feral colony cats who have been altered. Tracking their movements and identifying them when they are recaptured is essential to monitoring overall success of TNR efforts. Lorna microchipped over 150 cats during her two clinics worked as a volunteer.

Lorna spent two days assisting at an AdvoCats Hawaii spay/neuter clinic. She practiced ear tipping and microchipping during the clinics.
Eartipping is a procedure done to identify altered cats who are part of a feral or managed stray colony. In this clinic the right eartip was removed for females, left for males. This allows the colony to be monitored
for altered vs. unaltered, male vs. female populations. Sandy Brown, catlover, owner of Kountry Kitty Inn and PURR Board Member cuddles small feral after surgery. Many of these babes will never feel a human touch again, Sandy made sure they were loved and handled with lots of TLC
						while she had the chance.
